I use mutt with Maildir local mails storage. Maildirs are great (one file per message, no corruption risk), except that mutt doesn't cache mail headers. So opening a folder with thousands of messages can be quite slow and annoying. Michael Elkins wrote a patch that enables mutt to cache Maildir (and mh) folders emails' headers.
I slightly edited it, so that :
